A Brief History of Candra Naya Building, Once A Residence of the Major of Chinese Community in Glodok Chinatown Jakarta
The Candra Naya building is once a private residence of Khouw Family of Tamboen, a migrant who arrived in Tegal, and then move to Batavia. He and his descendants live at the building across many eras, and one of his descendants, Khouw Kim An inherited the house and become a Major of Chinese citizens from 1918 to 1918, and from 1927 until his death in the year of 1945.

At the post colonialism era, the building was inherited by the major’s family and later sold to an organization called New Light Society, and later was changed to Tjandra Naja Social Union. Thus, the name of Candra Naya building originated. The building was popular as a wedding venue in the 1960s and 1970s. It is later becoming a cultural property by the city of Jakarta in 1972.
A Look of Chinese Traditional House That Exist Between Around a Superblock Around Glodok Jakarta Area
What is unique about this building’s location is it is right in the front of centre of a superblock compound, called the Green Central City that consists of offices and apartments. At first, the traditional style house was intended to be demolished as a part of the superblock construction. However, due to protests, the building was preserved.
